KearneyAfrica team members have collectively had over 50 years of experience in advisory and legal support roles relating to the continent of Africa. Some of the team members have been dominant legal experts in commercial sectors and in key legal disciplines. These include the oil and gas sector, electricity development, finance and regulation, mergers and acquisitions and project finance.
By virtue of our individual reputations, we have been frequently invited by public and private sector leaders in various countries to contribute our expertise and commitment to key initiatives in those countries, especially in the development of power, the advancement of the countries’ petroleum sector and the installation of key industrial infrastructure. We are given this level of welcome and acceptance, we believe, because of our expertise, our professional competence and especially our demonstrated good will towards Africa’s commercial and economic advancement.
Our team of advisors have witnessed and participated in some of the continent’s key industrial developments and advancements. This includes, on behalf of our clients, participating in: the broadening of telecommunications coverage and efficacy; the public sector’s increased involvement in midstream and downstream activities in the petroleum sector; the widening of the African electricity footprint; a greater commitment, in that regard, to renewable and relatively cleaner electricity; and an increase in the development of local commercial capacity by way of local content and empowerment legislation.
In terms of the myriad individual project experiences in Africa, our respective team members have had heavy-lifting advisory roles in projects in all parts of the continent, including lead project finance advice to a state-owned electricity utility in south-west Africa where state reserves of natural gas were designated as the plant fuel for a major regional power plant; general outside legal advisor to a central African power ministry embarking on the lead role in developing a mid-stream petrochemical plant utilizing the countries liquid and gas petroleum products; corporate and project finance advice to a Houston-based oil company engaged in developing storage and trading facilities for its petroleum production activities in a central Africa oil producing country; providing corporate, regulatory and project finance advice to a west Africa government engaged in developing a multi-phased installment of combined cycle electricity plants, with combined capacity of over 1200 megawatts; providing regulatory and general petroleum industry advice to a number of African governments relating to the development or enhancement of their respective petroleum laws and or production sharing agreements; regulatory and compliance advice to a number of oil companies in regards to their respective obligations under US, European and local African anticorruption laws; providing public international law expertise to a African governments to advance their sovereign boundary rights in disputes involving sovereign neighbors; and providing general international dispute expertise in regards to the interests of public and private sector clients engaged in commercial disputes in international tribunals.
